This interview candidate had already gone through a pre-screening for a position that he felt overqualified for. However, you know how the job market is right now. After being unemployed for quite some time, he was willing to take what some might consider to be a “step back.” For him, it wasn't a step back. The candidate had made peace with the fact that because the number of available jobs in his area was scarce, pursuing a position he would have gotten five years ago would not be a crushing blow to his ego.
However, it would not be until he came in for his in-person interview when the candidate would discover that his limits actually had been tested.

As the candidate himself stated, you know there's a problem when even the HR representative completely understands why you rescinded the job application! Let this be a reminder to all job candidates out there. You do not have to accept poor treatment just because it's hard to find a job. And for the recruiters and hiring managers reading this, please remember to treat others with the same level of professionalism you hope they will bring to an interview.
